Christmas cooking: Iced eggnog latte

With Christmas coming up, I decided to post a piece about a summery twist on a northern hemisphere favourite of mine. For anyone wondering what this post has to do with travelling – it doesn’t. Or you could consider it a travel food post. Or not. It’s my site and I’ll blog if I want to!

George Street, Sydney, at Christmas time!

Christmas is a great time/excuse to cook, and for me it’s not just about the food. As a self-confessed coffee addict, I love the northern hemisphere’s traditions of having special drinks at this time of year! However being stuck in Australia for Christmas means that things like mulled wine and hot butter rum don’t really make a whole lot of sense – even in Melbourne it’s hot and sticky outside today, and I’m headed for Sydney soon.

Last year I wrote about the gingerbread house which I made, and brought you the simple recipe for Gingerbread Latte. This year it’s all about iced eggnog latte – I got, and it’s really really good (but very rich – don’t expect to gulping down too much of this!). It takes a while because you start with making real eggnog with this wonderful recipe from A Sweet Pea Chef and then allow it to cool before adding the coffee.

Step one: Make real eggnog with this recipe

Step two: Allow it to cool in the fridge.

Step three: Add ice to a tall glass, pour a shot of espresso over it, then top it up with the chilled eggnog mixture (pour gently to maintain the layered effect of the espresso in the ice). Dust the top with ground nutmeg and enjoy!

Merry Christmas everyone!
