In the second of our UrbanLegends interview series on UrbanDuniya, we meet Agness Walewinder, one half of eTramping.com, and Amsterdam enthusiast!
Agness and Cez are best friends and travel companions from Poland. These two are sharing their budget travel tips on how to travel the world with $25 in your pocket. Since 2011, they have been travelling the world while teaching English in different Asian countries such as China, Thailand or Cambodia. They are both photography-passionate and obsessed with Chinese cuisine and culture.
What is your favourite city in the world, and why?
Amsterdam is one of my very favorite European cities. Back in 2013 I found myself falling in love with its gorgeous canals and stunning architecture. I dreamt of having an Amsterdam apartment with a canal view and thought excitingly about how I’d bike to and from work each day alongside the thousands of other cyclists. Now I’m living here, working and studying and I could not be happier.
When did you first visit the city, and what was your experience like?
I came to Amsterdam in late November 2012. I was simply blown away by its stunning view at night, friendly locals and amazing bike tradition in the city. I was also a bit disappointed with limited outdoor activities and tourists who were smoking way too much weed. Although they were are few churches around, parks and museums, I was still missing the old market square or Christmas market like in Berlin for example.
What is your favourite place to go/thing to do in this city?
One of my favourite places in Amsterdam is the National Maritime Museum. Scheepvaartmuseum showed me how Dutch culture has been shaped by the sea and I was taken on a wonderful journey back in the Golden Age and the tale of the whale. It was a wonderful experience stepping back in time.
If this city was a person, what would he/she be like?
Cozy, relaxed, open-minded, old-fashioned and friendly.
If you could dedicate a song to this city, which one would it be?
“Amsterdam” by Coldplay
What’s your favourite place to eat in this city, and what dish is your favourite?
Amsterdam offers a limitless supply of cafes and bars, somewhere around 1500. Every street side, corner, canal, nook and cranny has something to offer your taste buds and mood. For such a big coffee lover, this city is just a heaven! I often eat in Bagels and Beans, La Place and de Fles. As for my favourite food I would probably go for a beef steak with salad or grilled salmon with veggies.
