Tropfest 2013 logoTropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, is held in Sydney tonight, two months earlier than usual as part of a program rejig.

Part of the revised festival also sees it being held in Centennial Park in the city’s eastern suburbs, rather than the traditional venue of the Domain.

Tropfest, which was traditionally held in February, was brought forward due to that month’s unpredictable weather. For the festival, films must be no longer than seven minutes in duration and must somehow relate to a yearly festival topic. Today’s 22nd outing for the festival sees sixteen short films centred around the theme of ‘change’.

Melbournians can also enjoy Sydney’s Tropfest tonight by attending one of the remote venue locations, listed at this website. Similar venues can be found in Canberra, Hobart, Perth and in Surfer’s Paradise.

Tropfest began in 1993 as a small screening in Sydney’s Tropicana Cafe and has since grown to be the world’s largest short film festival. Editions of Tropfest now also take place in Abu Dhabi, London, Berlin, Toronto, Bangkok and New York.

Tropfest will be screened on Australia’s ABC2 this year. Go to Tropfest Australia’s website for more details. A selection of films can also be found on Tropfest’s YouTube channel.
