The scents of incense, jasmine, vanilla and jaggery wafted from street stalls and I decided that one day I would return to Kolkata for much longer.

Kolkata is a city of parks, of regal monuments and of crumbling colonial architecture. It is a city of artists and beggars, of gentlemen and poverty.

I visited Amritsar’s Golden Temple at the time of the Vaisakhi festival; covered with thousands of lights, it shimmered in the surrounding “pool of nectar”.
