‘Roar and Snore’ is the name given to a series of programs at zoos around the world, allowing animal lovers to spend the night camping among the wild beasts.

Billed as ‘Sydney’s ultimate sleepover’, comfortable safari tents are set up in Sydney’s iconic Taronga Zoo, where visitors will sleep with a view of the twinkling harbour lights and within earshot of braying animals. Dinner is served, and a number of night-time activities are offered, including a tour of the zoo in total darkness, and the opportunity to see the zoo’s nocturnal inhabitants come to life. The following morning patrons wake to the sound of the elephants stirring, while eating breakfast with million-dollar harbour views. Visitors also have the opportunity to explore the zoo before the public gates open, allowing them a rare, intimate experience with the creatures.

Meanwhile, at Melbourne Zoo, Roar ‘n’ Snore offers visitors a similarly unique experience with accommodation being housed in the historic Elephant Exhibit, the now-disused building which dates back to the 1940s. Meals are similarly provided, and guests are also given the chance to experience the magic of the zoo at night, as well as roaming around before the crowds arrive the next morning.

Tickets for Roar and Snore at Taronga Zoo can be purchased at Taronga Zoo‘s website. Melbourne Zoo‘s website provides information, but bookings must be made by telephone on 1300 966 784. Dates are available from now into the summer months.
