Tiramisu Recipe
Tiramisu is a popular (and not very old) Italian dessert whose name literally means ‘pick me up’. It’s sweet, creamy and if made properly has a wonderful velvety texture. All things considered, it is a perfect non-traditional dish for Eid – why not try it this year? This simple recipe takes very little time but turns out a delicious dessert.

Tiramisu
Serves 12, takes 10 minutes to prepare (3 hours to set)
Ingredients
- 300mL black coffee
- Imitation rum (optional)
- 200g white/caster sugar
- 450mL thickened cream
- Chocolate or cocoa powder
- 500g sponge finger biscuits (Italian name Savoiardi, in Australia a common brand is Unibic)
- 500g marscapone
You’ll need
- A large (preferably glass) baking tray and a whisk
Method
- Make up the black coffee and allow it to cool a little. Add enough imitation rum to taste – probably about a teaspoon or two.
- In a separate bowl, mix the sugar, cream and marscapone together until thick and smooth.
- Take some sponge biscuits and dip their underside into the coffee-rum mix, make sure one side of them is still dry.
- Place the dry sides down to cover the base of a large baking dish; the dry sides form the bottom of the tiramisu and the wet upper mix in with the first layer.
- Layer some of the cream mix over the top until the biscuits are fully covered.
- Take more sponge biscuits and cover them in the coffee mix; these ones will be in the centre of the dessert, so they don’t need a dry side. Place these over the cream layer, completely covering it.
- Continue layering the cream and the biscuits until you run out of mixture. This recipe yields enough for two layers of biscuit (including the base), and two layers of cream (including the top), however if you end up with more, then you can keep going. Make sure the top layer is cream, not biscuit.
- Dust the top with chocolate powder and refrigerate for three hours to set.
