India today celebrates Republic Day, marking the date when the Constitution of India was first implemented in 1950.
In Chennai, Republic Day is celebrated with a military parade along Kamarajar Salai from Light House near Mylapore to the War Memorial near Chepauk, according to The Hindu. Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area if possible, and to exercise patience.
In the capital New Delhi a military parade will take place along Rajpath. The day is also noted for its chief guest from a foreign nation; this year the Indian capital is hosting the Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.
India’s Republic Day celebration coincides with Australia’s national day, and is marked by the Indian community in Australia as well as the small Australian expatriate community in India.
