Durian-eating and roti canai-making competitions will feature in the culture- and culinary-based line-up at the inaugural Melbourne Malaysia Festival today.
It is perhaps fitting that such activities headline the celebration of a nation for whom eating is like a national sport. And considering the delights that Malaysian cuisine has to offer, why shouldn’t it be? Malaysian cooking classes and demonstrations will also be held, offering visitors the chance to learn the tricks of the trade to replicate at home.
The festival is sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, which next year will celebrate ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2014’. It also recognises the large Malaysian community in Australia and particularly in Melbourne.
Cultural performances and a photo gallery from the National Malaya and Borneo Veterans Association of Australia Inc. will also be seen, recognising the contribution of Australian troops in times of war.
As today also marks Deepavali (Diwali), the biggest event of the Malaysian Hindu calendar, scores of candles will light up the festival after sunset.
The Melbourne Malaysia Festival is being held on Sunday 3rd November at Queensbridge Square, across the road from Crown Entertainment Complex in Southbank, Melbourne. More information can be found at the festival’s website.
