Al-Khan Restaurant Lahore

One of my favourite things about living in Pakistan is having a full Pakistani breakfast on Sunday mornings. So how lucky was I to be taken by some friends to Al-Khan in Lahore’s southern districts?

At Al-Khan you can tuck into a buffet with the typical channa (chick pea) dishes with fresh and hot naan. I loaded up my plate with typically heavy Punjabi breakfast dishes; a chicken masala dish, potato masala, aloo paratha, eggs both buttery fried and spiced omelette, and of course siri pai. If you have never tried siri pai before, make sure you’ve come along with an empty stomach – this fatty, oily mixture of slow-cooked lambs brain and trotters served with bread will have you feeling stuffed all day.

There’s also halwa puri – sweet semolina served with fried bread puffs – to compliment the savoury mains. Of course they have lassi – a godsend in the summer. And to my delight, they served Kashmiri tea – a milky pink cuppa with nuts, spices, sugar and a hint of salt.

Kashmiri Chai!

As someone who needs to be careful about what they eat from the street, Al-Khan perfectly satisfied my hankering for an authentic Lahori breakfast. One of the pitfalls of eating at high-end places is a lack of authenticity, however Al-Khan balances authentic, real taste with hygiene – a great hybrid of what I wanted and peace of mind! I’l definitely be back for more!

Hmmm…. siri pai first thing sounds a little challenging for this little lady, but the milky pink cuppa sounds delightful. Great post, you adventure to parts of the world I wouldn’t really hit up, so its cool to visit via you.

Such tempting photos! I lived in North India for quite a few years and had more Punjabi food than I would’ve liked, but I’ve always and forever wanted to try the same in Pakistan. Hopefully I can cross over one day soon.
