Muslims across Australia will celebrate Eid ul-Fitr tomorrow, marking the conclusion of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Based on the Islamic calendar the month of Shawaal, marking the end of Ramadan, began at sunset tonight, meaning the day of Eid ul-Fitr has officially begun in Australia.

For many the day begins with prayer at a mosque, with Melbourne City’s masjid holding Eid prayers at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Feasting will take place in households across the nation, with the usual visiting friends and relatives. Being a weekday, Eid ul-Fitr this year will see many Muslims celebrate in the evening after finishing work.

Delhi’s Jama Masjid is one of countless mosques where Shab-e-Qadr will draw thousands.

Pakistanis and Indians have at least one more day of fasting ahead of them, with the crescent moon of the month of Shawaal not being sighted in the subcontinent until now. Pakistan’s Daily Times reports that the nation’s Ruet-e-Hilal (moonsighting committee) is to meet tomorrow to confirm the date of Eid as either Friday or Saturday.
