It was years ago that I first went to Melbourne’s night market, with its usual range of tasty food, kitschy souvenir items and quality products.

Held at Queen Victoria Market, the summer season began last month and is now in full swing. In its 16th year, the market has become a regular attraction for many Melbournians in the warmer months.

What surprised me most about the night market back when I visited was the number of stall owners who were interested in staying open later – parts of the Queen Victoria Market, I found almost as many stalls there as on a Saturday morning.

I walked away from that experience with a pair of sunglasses which lasted 3 days, a belly full of delectable Persian food from what would now be called a “pop-up store”, and fond memories of the sun setting on a warm Melbourne day.

A band of policemen and women were playing music in the area between the markets and the Elizabeth Street, not far from the regular jam stalls. Bigger than ever before, this year’s program advertises several local acts including Al Parkinson and Mietta.

Melbourne’s Night Market goes ahead each Wednesday night rain, hail or shine held every. The are open from 5pm to 10pm until the end of February. For more information, go to the Melbourne Night Market website.
