Antipodes Lonsdale Street Festival brings Melbourne’s Greek soul to life

Antipodes FestivalMelbourne’s Greek community will come together at the Antipodes’ Lonsdale Street Festival today and tomorrow.

Antipodes, the cultural arm of the Greek Community of Melbourne, organises the annual Lonsdale Street Festival in what is known as the Greek Precinct of Melbourne.

Lonsdale Street will be closed between Swanston Street and Russell Street for the weekend, while Russell Street will be closed at the intersection of Lonsdale Street.

At 1:30pm today a zorba-dancing competition will take over the precinct, with carnival rides, food stalls and bars serving throughout the afternoon, then Greek karaoke, and cooking demonstrations filling the afternoon. The official opening will take place at 7pm followed by Greek singer Kostas Makedonas will appear live in concert, with Emmanouil Geogostathis directing Orchestra Emmetron.

Tomorrow, Kostas Makedonas will perform live again at 8:30pm, but not before a Greek dancing competition and a performance by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia David The Psalmist Byzantine Choir.
