The dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in her iconic scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is often known as ‘that little black dress’, but who where is it now? And who was it designed by? The answer to the first question is Melbourne, Australia, and the second question can be answered by a visit to ACMI’s current visiting exhibition, the excellent Hollywood Costume collection.

The dress is just one of an impressive range of costumes on display at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Federation Square, downtown Melbourne. Among the others are Scarlett O’Hara’s green ‘curtain’ dress designed for Gone with the Wind, and Judy Garland’s dress from the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. Charlton Heston’s gladiator costume from Ben Hur is also on display, as is Marilyn Monroe’s sequinned dress from Some Like it Hot.

Costumes from more recent movies include Daniel Craig’s tuxedo from James Bond: Casino Royale, Uma Thurman’s yellow jumpsuit from Kill Bill Vol. 1, Keanu Reeve’s trench coat from The Matrix, and one of Nicole Kidman’s elaborate pieces from Moulin Rouge. Austin Power’s corny velvet suit, The Blues Brothers’ trademark sunglasses, and Meryl Streep’s outfits from Mamma Mia and The Iron Lady are all here too.

Look forward to costumes from Saving Private Ryan, Die Hard, Terminator, Pirates of the Caribbean, Brokeback Mountain, Fight Club, Independence Day, Elizabeth, Shakespeare in

Love, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, and the Spiderman series. While there, you can also check out the rest of what ACMI has to offer, including permanent exhibitions on the history of film and television in Australia, as well as hands-on technology exhibits.

Hollywood Costume is at ACMI at Federation Square until Sunday 18th August. Entry to ACMI’s permanent exhibits is free, but entry to Hollywood Costume is $19.50 for adults, $15.50 for concessions. Tickets may be purchased online here.
