Cars decorated for Ayudha Puja in Chennai

Ayudha Puja, the biggest event in the week of Navratri for most Tamil Hindus, is celebrated today in Chennai.

The ninth day in the festival of Navratri will be marked in Chennai and Tamil Nadu with a celebration of the tools and implements of modern life. Cars will be decorated with tree branches, gates adorned with flowers, and prayers said in the morning as the city gears up for the most auspicious day for this period.

Melons smashed on Chennai streets for Ayudha Puja

Watermelons will feature in prayers before being smashed on the road. Tamil social organisations in Australian cities are expected to organise prayer services and celebrations as well.

The legend of Ayudha Puja holds that the Hindu religious figure of Arjuna, son of Krishna, returned from thirteen years in exile on the ninth day of Navratri. On this day, he retrieved his weapons of war and cleaned them in preparation for a battle from which he was to emerge victorious.
